All About Blood Pressure Monitors

What are blood pressure monitors? A monitor, that monitors your blood pressure. This device will take your blood pressure as often as it is set for, and record the reading that it gets each time. This monitor will help doctors and nurses know if your blood pressure is too high or even too low.

When are blood pressure monitors used? Most of the time the blood pressure monitors are used when you are in the hospital. If you are undergoing some type of procedure in the hospital, many times the nurse will strap a monitor cuff to your arm, so that your blood pressure can be recorded and monitored while they are performing a procedure on you.

Does someone have to manually use a blood pressure monitor on me? A blood pressure monitor can be used manually used by a doctor or a nurse to take an accurate reading of your blood pressure. However, someone manually using the machine is not necessary. The machine will take your blood pressure at pre set times, so that it can be monitored without any one manually operating it.

Can a blood pressure monitor be used in the home? Yes, you can have a blood pressure machine installed in your home. This way you can have your blood pressure monitored, without ever leaving the house. Sometimes this monitor will be used on someone who is bed ridden, and does not have to worry about getting up and becoming unattached to the machine.

Are blood pressure monitors accurate? Most of the time, if the cuff is placed on the arm correctly, the blood pressure machine will monitor your blood pressure accurately. Making sure that the cuff is placed on the arm in the correct spot, and that it is snug enough that it does not move and slide down your arm, will help ensure an accurate reading.

While blood pressure monitors can be used without someone manually taking your blood pressure, this is a great device for when there is no one around that knows exactly how to do this. Making sure the cuff is on correctly is the key to an accurate reading, and will help ensure that you are having your blood pressure taken correct.

Joane realizes the importance of health monitors as she has been a diabetic and has suffered from heart disease for most of her life. She has used various displays over the years and compares the essential features of both devices at http://www.healthdisplays.com, as well as other monitors such as heart rate monitors.

A Cure For Bad Breath Will You Seek Professional Help?

Who seeks a cure for bad breath? About 30% of the population feels they never suffer from bad breath, except after eating a meal abundant in onions or garlic. Another 35% suffer from bad breath, but do not seek professional help when over-the-counter products fail. Only 35% of the population is so fed up with their bad breath problem that they seek professional help for a cure.

What? Professional help? Aren?t the only bad breath cures available on the shelves of the local grocery store? Mistakenly, that is what many people believe. When the ?fresh breath? toothpastes and ?bacteria fighting? mouthwashes fail many people give up and accept their bad breath as a way of life. This can affect a person?s self-esteem and quality of life. The problem is that halitosis creates embarrassment for those who suffer from it, making it a condition people hide from, not openly discuss. Many people who suffer from bad breath bury their heads under the sand, throw in the towel, and suffer.

The first step is not to feel ashamed or embarrassed about bad breath or halitosis and in doing so, you are opening up yourself to communicating about your situation and finding a cure. And you don?t have to spend the money in seeking professional help to find that cure. As more and more people are demanding a cure that works, companies are performing research to develop the products that deliver the cure.

How to Cure Bad Breath?

Since bad breath is caused by excessive oral bacteria, to cure bad breath you must use products that bring the bacteria back to levels that don?t cause bad breath. One way to start the process is to cut off the food source from these bacteria, eliminating factors that lead to bacterial growth, and promote a healthy oral environment. A good start is to lay off the high-protein diets, eliminate dry mouth, cease smoking, stop drinking alcohol and reduce your usage of oral products and foods with alcohol in them.

But most people swear by their high-protein diets, refuse to stop smoking, and enjoy drinking in moderation. Also, if you are diabetic, suffer from sinus problems or take medications that cause dry mouth or bad breath, these suggestions may be a mute point. Which brings us to the question, without making any changes, how can a person cure bad breath. This cannot be done with mouthwashes or mints. These give your mouth a strong taste, which then leads you to believe if your mouth tastes ?medicated? or minty, then your breath must smell good. More importantly, technology and medical research on the causes of bad breath have made breath mints and minty mouth washes archaic forms of bad breath cures.

The problem goes back to embarrassment. Despite the new information and product development, people are too embarrassed about their bad breath to seek out new solutions, which is probably why you are reading this article online!

While searching for new products developed using the new research that bacteria causes bad breath, we came across Dr. Katz, who has helped more people in the nation cure their bad breath. A reliable source, we thought, who uses the following products on his patients who want to cure bad breath.

1. AktivOxigen tablets were created based on research performed by leading bacterial experts. By dissolving the ActivOxigen tablets into water you are creating a safe wash that you swallow at night to destroy bad breath on contact and eliminate morning breath.

2. Millions of people suffer from sinus problems, a cause of bad breath. Nasal-Sinus drops in conjunction with the ActivOxigen tablets can cure the bad breath.

3. Did you know that Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) has been proven to be linked to canker sores which also create bath breath? SLS is found in toothpaste and mouthwash as the ingredient that creates foaming. In our research we only came across one group of oral products that claims to fight bad breath and does not contain harmful SLS or Saccharin and that is TheraBreath.

There you have it, the cure for bad breath. You can make permanent changes in your diet and lifestyle for the better, and/or adopt the latest solutions in oral care that do not ?cover up? but rather cure bad breath. Either way, remember there is no shame in your condition and do not be afraid to seek help.

What Are the Risks for Breast Implants?

There are more and more women than ever getting breast implants. These numbers keep increasing each year as well and the ages of the women that are receiving the implants are getting younger and younger too. There are many pre adult girls that are getting the permission from their parents to have this serious procedure done.

The increase of the health risks for breast implants does not seem to have any affect of the women that are getting them put in. Most of these women only see that they are going to have a sexier appearance and forget about what they could be doing to their bodies. Although there have been many successful breast implants surgeries, there have also been a few that have had awful outcomes that have meant serious heath effects for the women.

There have been many women that have had their implants break inside them. This has led to the women getting them taken out or replaced. Every single breast implant surgery has risks regardless of the material that they are made of. Women that have the older style of implants should start to think about getting them replaced with the new material that is used in the breast implants.

The surgical risks of breast implants include infection or forming a hecatomb. The risk of one or even both of the implants will have to be removed involves another surgery and the of course the costs of the surgery will still apply.

Other important complications can stem from breast implants. Some women will lose feeling in their breasts, while others will become very sensitive. These problems can interfere with sexual pleasure for the woman. Not only are their serious health?s factors there are also some cosmetic problems to deal with. Sometimes the outcome of the breast implants does not turn out to be what they have expected. Some women are very disappointed with the results of the surgery.

It is also said that breast implants will interfere with the detection of breast cancer. The implants can obscure the mammography image of a tumor. Implants have the potential to delay the diagnosis of breast cancer. Mammograms tend to be less accurate if the woman had the breast implants. The bigger the implants, the harder it will be to detect the size and portion of the tumor. This is going to harm the women because they will not be detected early if they do have any cancerous tumors. By the time they are found, it may be too late for the proper treatment.

It is important to at least know and understand all of the risks that are involved with breast implants. Women need to know what the potential dangers are so that they can make an informed decision about whether or not to have the breast implant surgery.

Overcoming Social Anxiety Disorder

The first step in overcoming social anxiety disorder is to learn as much as you can about it. This helps you to recognize the cause of your problems and increases the speed of your recovery, since you are able to recognize and respond to your own symptoms.

The next step is to get professional help by consulting a qualified doctor. This is most important in order to establish if your symptoms are indeed related to anxiety disorder or something else, so that you can get a treatment that works for you.

A close family member or friend can be very helpful in overcoming your condition. This person acts as a buddy and coach with whom you can discuss your efforts on a regular basis. After that you must follow a plan that you or your doctor will make and evaluate your progress regularly.

But YOU are the only person who can lead to quick recovery. Yoga and breathing techniques that help you relax and control reflexes are helpful for some people. Similarly, audiotapes are helpful in passively reinforcing positive messages in your mind. Meeting others like you is also an effective way to finding solutions. When one is able to rationally understand the symptoms of anxiety disorder through another person?s experiences, he will gradually start applying the same logic to his own behavior and actions. Though all this easier said than done, since most anxiety disorders bring along with them acute depression that does not allow the individual to take charge of his situation. The important thing to remember is that it is a fight, and that only you can win it, so every small step so that you can take towards meeting your goals is a big achievement. The goal can be as small as waking up early in the morning and getting out of the house to smell the flowers.

Exercising Your Face Fact or Fiction?

You?ve looked in the mirror and have decided it?s time to do something for your face. You?re not exactly certain whether you should call the nearest plastic surgeon or take matters into your own hands. After all, this is your face and even though you don?t want to look sixteen again, you do want to do something that will stop those tired eyes and droopy cheeks.

Facial exercise has been in and out of vogue for hundreds of years. There are many practitioners of facial manipulation; so what works best?

There?s yoga for the face that aids lymphatic drainage, needle therapy via acupuncture, contortions and isometric/resistance training. All seem to have one goal and that is to help the user look youthful.

There are many benefits when exercise is used for the face: better posture is achieved as the neck muscles strengthen, a healthier face develops as blood flow is increased and collagen production is stimulated, and the facial skin becomes supple, refreshed and resilient. A facial exerciser will look younger as the sagging skin and supporting muscles reposition and align; the face will firm and lift.

Exercise is natural. It?s not invasive, there is no risk and the only ?tools? one needs are the fingers and thumbs.

Facial exercises using isometric and resistance type movements prove best. Why? Unlike other parts of the body, the facial muscles are connected to bone on one end only. The other end is connected to another muscle. In order to achieve a contraction in these muscles, special anchoring techniques are required for the specific muscle or muscle group. Just like exercising your arms or legs, when a contraction of the muscle is created, the muscles shorten and then ?plump?. When facial muscles contract this action lifts the skin because facial skin is attached directly to the muscles

Looking younger is the mantra of most every baby boomer. This generation of ?forever young? adults knows the importance of good eating habits, exercising the body and using the finest non-chemical skin care items. Facial exercise fits the bill for anyone wanting to look 10-15 years younger without spending their children?s inheritance. Whether you?re 35 or 70, you will see a difference when you exercise your face.

5 Easy Ways To Stay Healthy

Staying healthy is subject that everyone should be concerned with; after all the healthier you are the better quality of life you tend to lead. There are many reasons why people want to stay healthy. Perhaps they want to spend more time with family and friends or maybe they just want to be able to lead an active lifestyle without restrictions imposed upon their activities due to age and a sedentary lifestyle. Whatever your reason may be for wanting to stay healthy there is sometimes a mitigating factor involved that slows you down in your quest for health. Fortunately this article focuses on 5 easy ways to stay healthy.

One of the best methods to garner a healthier lifestyle is through the use of biofeedback. This technique is painless and can be very enlightening as it allows you to discover and see for yourself when you are letting stress take over your life. A biofeedback reading monitors your body making you aware of when you tighten your muscles up usually as a result of a buildup of stress. Armed with this knowledge you can then focus on relaxing which will lead to a more stress free inner peace. Biofeedback has been successful in treat migraines, chronic pains associated with other ailments and in the fight to lower and control high blood pressure.

Acupuncture has gained a widespread reputation as an easy way to stay healthy based on the success it has achieved throughout countries like China, Japan and even the United States. The premise behind acupuncture is that it promotes a natural healing process within the body and spirit. Acupuncture consist of needles placed in strategic locations on your body in such a way that they improve blood flow and encourage the body to dissipate any bad energies that may be contained within your organs. The release of such energies is what causes acupuncture to be recognized as a quick and easy way to get back on the road to a healthier lifestyle.

If you?re looking for a way to eliminate built up stress, encourage overall good health and reduce headaches, joint aches and muscle aches due to high tension buildup then a therapeutic massage may be just what the doctor ordered. Massages come in many different varieties in order to target specific aches and pains. For instance there is a standard sports massage, a pressure point massage and the more popular Swedish massage. All three of these types of massages can help control stress and put your body in a state of relaxation allowing it to internally start a healing process. Always make sure to seek out a licensed therapeutic masseuse in order to get the full benefits associated with a massage.

Finally one of the best, quickest and easiest ways to start leading a healthier lifestyle is by letting your body and mind recuperate and fully charge with between 6 to 8 hours of quality sleep each night. Sleep is without a doubt one of the best ways to completely influence your overall health (both physically and mentally). Try getting less then the optimum recommended level of sleep and you?ll see the harmful effects that can occur. On the flip side spend the next few nights obtaining the sleep your body craves and needs and you will see a marked improvement in your energy levels, your ability to tolerate stressful situations and your natural ability to think will vastly improve.

As you read this article there was one central theme that sticks out and that is stress. The ability to reduce stress is crucial to your ability to lead a healthier lifestyle. Don?t worry about eliminating stress entirely. It?s almost impossible to do and some stress (in small doses) is actually good for our health. Keeping your stress levels under control with the previously mentioned 5 quick ways to stay healthy will control your stress levels allowing you to have a normal blood pressure level, eliminate aches, tension and headaches and fell refreshed and full of energy. Remember the real key to a healthier lifestyle is controlling stress.

Managing Your Diabetes

So you've decided it's time to take control of your diabetes and start managing your diabetes. This will involve making some changes to your lifestyle. Do you know where to start? Probably the best place to start is with your doctor. Together you can work out a diabetes plan designed specifically for you and your lifestyle. Your goal will be to lower your blood sugar levels, which will require some changes to your lifestyle. It may seem like a lot of hard work at first, but once you start to notice how much better you feel, that will be reward enough and provide you with motivation.

Your plan should include the times of the day when you will take your medication. Your medication should be taken at the same time each day to be the most effective. Next you should plan to change to a healthy eating schedule. By planning your meals in advance, you can then shop accordingly for the foods and ingredients you will need. This is a very important part of managing your diabetes. You may also want to meet with a registered dietician, your doctor or other diabetes professional to help create a personalized meal plan for you. Discuss your new lifestyle plan with family and friends and ask for their support in making these changes.

Now that you have your medication and meal plan done, you should schedule in some daily physical activity. Studies show that exercise is one of the best ways to help control and prevent diabetes. If you are new to exercise you may want to start out small with maybe a short walk each day. Then work your way up to a longer walk or work small periods of exercise into your day while doing your gardening, shopping or housework. Consider taking the stairs instead of an elevator. You could also sign up for a class for swimming or light aerobic exercise. Dust off your bike and begin taking your bike to work. All of these activities will add up and help you with managing your diabetes.

It helps if you surround yourself with positive people who want the best for you and make it easier for you to make the right decisions when it comes to managing your diabetes. See if you can get someone in your family or a friend to exercise with you. This will help keep you motivated.

One more thing you need to work into your diabetes management plan is regular testing of your blood sugar levels. By monitoring your blood sugar levels on a daily basis, it will give you an indication of what you need to do that day, whether its paying more attention to what you eat or incorporating more exercise into your routine. It may also show you that your blood sugar levels are improving and that the new meal plan and daily exercise are paying off.

Throughout all of these changes to your lifestyle, it is important that you keep communicating with your doctor. Keep your doctor informed about the changes you have incorporated into your lifestyle and discuss how you are feeling both mentally and physically. Talk to your doctor about the positive changes you have made as well as any challenges you may still have.

So, to recap, your plan for managing your diabetes should include your daily medication, eating well, being active on a daily basis, monitoring your blood sugar levels daily and communicating with your doctor regularly. You may find some days are more difficult than others to continue with your plan, but the important thing is to never give up. Each day is a new beginning, so make the best healthy choices for yourself each day, forgive yourself when you don't and begin fresh the next day.

Environmental Causes of Adult Onset Hormonal Acne

Don?t listen when they tell you, ?You?ll grow out of it.?

According to the American Academy of Dermatology your typical acne sufferer is now 26 years old. Why is that? You could blame it on hormones. But there is another covert explanation.

Acne is not a simple, skin condition. Multiple factors can contribute to one case of acne. Yet one issue has long been overlooked in the mounting cases adults with hormonal acne, and that factor is the environment.

Take for example an entire city in Italy that one-day found itself crowded with citizens battling acne.

It was a calm Saturday in the summer of 1976 that turned into a toxic inferno for the people of Seveso, Italy. The cause- a failing chemical blew a cloud of white poison called trichlorophenol into the air.

Heat from the reaction transformed the trichlorophenol into a one of the most deadly chemicals know at that time: TCDD or dioxin.

Dioxin is an oily powder that sticks to the skin. This poison is spread by the wind and rain. Only the sun can break this poison down over a span of several years.

Months after the explosion locals suffered from damaged internal tissue and farm animals would drop dead in fields. People also developed bumps, blisters and chloracne- a form of acne caused by chemical poisoning. Moreover, locals developed blackheads and other acne lesions because the dioxin forced the body to produce excessive amounts of keratin, the protein found in hair, fingernails and skin. This buildup of keratin clogged the pores and caused pimples and blackheads.

Ironically, we, as consumers could be making dioxins every day in our own home.

Almost every home has a product that contains triclosan. This anti-bacterial agent is used to make cosmetics, anti-microbial creams, lotions, hand soaps, dish soaps and even acne treatments. Nevertheless, researchers from the University of Minnesota demonstrated that triclosan could be producing dioxins in the presence of sunlight.

Dioxins do not degrade over time and they can accumulate in body tissues and can eventually to lead to health problems. Even low levels of dioxin are a problem because of their tendency to accumulate along the food chain. For instance, since dioxin accumulates in the fats tissues, and so dioxin may be found in fish, eggs, milk, chicken and beef.

Thus, the link between acne and milk may not be only a hormonal issue, but a result of environmental pollution.

Dioxin is not only linked to acne, but to other rising health conditions like asthma and attention deficit disorder.

Making a substantial reduction in environmental dioxin levels is a nationwide effort. However you can limit your exposure to dioxins right now by avoiding the use of pesticides, drinking filtered water and by eating less meat products.

How To Become A Healthy Vegetarian: 3 Easy Steps

You want to gain health and lose weight? But you are too anxious due to the usual misinformation that flies around about vegetarian diets, like you cannot get enough protein, iron or calcium on a vegetarian diet? Or ?it is all too hard! ? You certainly can get complete nutrition from a vegetarian diet. It is not hard and you can start today.

Take three steps to see yourself on the way to a healthier life. It?s simple: know why you want to try a vegetarian diet; get the right information without being overwhelmed by it; then? do it.

A good vegetarian diet is indeed a good thing. But as with everything an unbalanced one is not. Just any low calorie and vegetarian recipe or easy vegetarian recipe will not do. If you have been a meat eater for many years your body may need to adjust to a supply of minerals that are of different proportions to vegetarian diets. That is why it is important to set out on the road of vegetarianism with some knowledge about its benefits and pitfalls.

But first, if you want to commit yourself to anything, it is important to know your motivations for doing just that. No motivation, no perseverance. Here are some reasons that motivate millions of people to eat their vegetarian meal today:

Weight loss
Many people take to a vegetarian diet or specifically a low calorie and vegetarian recipes regime because they think a carrot-and-lettuce? diet will slim them down. They may see vegetarianism as a kind of punishment for a body that has gone off the rails. Consequently, unless they are lucky and stumble across information that shows them how delicious a true vegetarian diet can be, they are at risk of returning to their old diets as soon as some weight has come off. A balanced vegetarian diet may indeed give enduring weight loss benefits.

Health reasons
Studies suggest that vegetarians have a significantly reduced risk of death from heart disease (about 30%) than meat eaters, including those who eat fish and poultry. As the iron in meat is more available to our bodies than in plants, it is more likely that iron-overload occurs in our blood as meat eaters age. This is a problem as high iron levels are associated with cancer risk. Some studies show a reduced cancer risk for vegetarians. But because many vegetarians also exercise, do not smoke and do not drink much alcohol, that benefit is a bit hard to pin down. Do it all, and be sure to be healthy! There are many more health reasons to go vegetarian.

Religious reasons
Some religions proscribe a vegetarian diet, with some going to great lengths to destroy as little life as possible (What?s that? Oh, no, of course I am not talking about destroying human lives as a result of their diet? smartie! But you do have a sense of humour, often a typical vegetarian trait). Reasons can include reaping good karma but some also maintain a healthy body so their spiritual life may have better chances to flourish.

Environmental reasons
Meat production is many times more energy-intensive than is growing of plant food. Great swathes of forest land have been cut to run cattle and the grazing of cattle on marginal lands causes soil erosion. In ur overpopulated world where our use of energy has already outstripped the earth?s capacity for renewal, overemphasis on meat consumption is self-destructive. Particularly when there are no compelling health reasons not to abstain from meat altogether. Many more environmental reasons exist, including reduction of suffering to animals.

Your reasons
There are many reasons for going vegetarian. You may be motivated by a combination of the above reasons or have a completely different, and valid reason. Be clear in your mind what that reason is and use that as your driving force.

A major pitfall of vegetarianism is that some people who change abruptly from meat eating to vegetarianism find that this does not make them feel any better. Don?t blame the vegetarian diet and give it some time. Treat your body with the respect it deserves. If your motivation is right, meaning you know why you are becoming vegetarian, you will put some effort into finding the right information and do not proceed in a hurry. Reduce your meat intake gradually and set yourself a reasonable time limit to get used to your vegetarian diet.

You can buy books on the subject or see a naturopath who can map out a transition plan for you. Talk to some vegetarians you know and you will find they are happy to share some recipes with you. Heck, they may even invite you to share their experience directly with them and invite you to dinner. If they don?t, take yourself (and them?) to a good vegetarian eating place. You can see that even just finding out about vegetarian food can be fun!

Yes, a vegetarian diet can easily contain all the nutrition that a human body needs. Therefore, the secret is in being clear in why you want to become vegetarian, get good information on any vegetarian recipe, low calorie and vegetarian recipe that you can find. There are many easy vegetarian recipe books out there that inform you on how to obtain all the nutrition you need and take you little time to prepare.

Of course there are unhealthy vegetarian diets. A balanced diet is the key. Having some basic knowledge about what foods you should include in your vegetarian diet is an essential starting point.

Vegetarian food can be absolutely delicious. Do it right from the start and you won?t look back. And? depending on how you eat now, a vegetarian diet can be easier on your wallet too!

Here?s to your health!

Erik Leipoldt has been a lacto-ovo vegetarian for 30 years and his children were raised vegetarian. He uses a wheelchair due to spinal cord injury and attributes much of his good health and normal weight to his vegetarian diet. He writes about vegetarianism, and other subjects, from his personal experience and knowledge found along the track. See his blog: http://low--calorie--and--vegetarian--recipe.blogspot.com/ He holds a PhD in Philosophy.

What do You Know About Indoor Pollution?

What do you know about indoor pollution? I never really thought much about it as you may not have either but I found that some people spend 90% of their time indoors. When you hear about pollution you nearly always picture some cars exhaust pipe or a large chimney stack pumping large plumes of black or grey smoke into the sky, but what could we be breathing in from just spending time at home.

Did you know that your furniture and fixings are all giving of dust and gasses as you use them? Take your sitting room for starters? did you know that your sofa is adding to pollution by producing dust from the break down of the fibers in it?... your bed?s also doing the same, the repeated use of the bedding weakens the fibres and they break down to a small enough size for us to breath them in. We?re also constantly breathing in house dust which can be made up of skin cells, moulds, bacteria, animal dander, viruses and pollen every day. So what can we do about it?

Firstly make sure you house has good ventilation, because some of our homes are so well insulated nowadays, the air doesn?t get replaced enough. (Years ago people didn?t have to worry about this as they had a lot of drafts and openings for the outside air to enter.) Try to open your windows daily to allow some fresh air in to dilute the pollutants. Try not to use air fresheners if you can?t open your windows as these only mask the smells and you end up breathing that in too which can just make things worse.

And secondly as I written before in an earlier article it?s still very important to remember to always breathe through your nose and avoid mouth breathing, because by not doing this you?re bypassing the natural filters in the nose and allowing foreign debris into your airways where it can become an irritant and maybe become a health issue further down the line.

How Mood and Food Affects Weight Loss

Your mood and food can trigger urges that can cause overeating. Eating for some people can be a way of suppressing or soothing negative emotions. These emotions could be stress, anger, anxiety, boredom, sadness and loneliness.

The connection between mood and food turn these emotional eaters toward comfort foods in times of trouble. They do not necessarily eat more food but they turn to more unhealthy foods.

Starchy, sweet, salty and fatty foods can seem to provide comfort but are usually short-term fixes. They can also lead to a long-term habit of unhealthy eating in response to negative feelings. This leads to weight gain and even more negative emotions that can be a never-ending cycle.

Understanding the reasons that cause you to crave unhealthy foods can help you avoid giving in to your cravings. Knowing some signs that trigger emotional overeating can help you recognize the path before you take it.

How your body reacts to these moods may indicate that some foods might have a seemingly addictive quality for many people. Scientists are studying the possibility that sweet and fatty foods might actually relieve anxiety.

For some people, eating comfort foods can be a distraction. While you are eating, your thoughts may be focused on the pleasant taste of the food, but the distraction is only temporary.

When you are finished overeating, you return to your problems and have now added the additional burden of feeling guilty about overeating.

Here are a few tips to help you avoid the unhealthy consequences of emotional overeating:

1. Learn to recognize if your hunger is real. Are you really hungry or is it emotional overeating?

2. Monitor your eating for the next several days, making note of how much and when you eat, how you are feeling and if you are really hungry. A pattern will begin to develop and you can recognize the negative triggers to overeating.

3. If you feel the need to eat because of your mood, try taking a walk, go to a movie or call a friend to distract you. This gives you a second chance for the feelings to eat to pass.

4. Don't keep starchy, high fat, high calorie, comfort foods in the house.

5. If you feel you just have to have something to eat between meals, make healthy choices. Keep fresh fruit, pretzels or low fat, low calorie foods available.

6. Try to eat your meals at the same time every day and stick to the basic food groups. Fill up on whole grains, vegetables and fruits, as well as low fat dairy products and lean meats.

When you eat like this you are more likely to feel full longer and avoid the need for emotional eating. Emotions can trigger cravings for food but you can take steps to control those cravings.

The correlation between your mood and food can affect your eating habits and ultimately your weight loss. Learning to recognize the signs is the first step to success.

Macular Degeneration Protect Your Vision

Macular degeneration is the leading cause of blindness in the age 65 and over group in both the United States and the United Kingdom. One in six Americans between the ages of 55 and 64 will be affected which increases to one in four between the ages of 64 and 74. Over the age of 75 one in three will be affected. Each year 1.2 million people of the estimated 12 million people with macular degeneration will have severe loss of central vision.

What is macular degeneration

The macular portion of the retina is where central vision occurs. This is the vision that allows us basically to see. This portion of the retina is mostly populated with cone cells, which are the cells that allow us to read, write and generally see things when there is sufficient light. The rod cells populate the rest of the retina and are what we see with in darkness. The cone portion of the retina has one of the highest metabolic rates of any group of cells in the body and like the brain, needs a constant supply of nutrients to maintain good vision. Anything that compromises blood flow to these cells can cause loss of function of these cells ie macular degeneration.

Symptoms

Because the brain is very good at filling in the visual picture, the early loss of function of the macular cone cells may go unnoticed. This means that in the early stages most people with macular degeneration don't know they have it. By the time it is usually diagnosed, it can be very advanced with considerable loss of visual acuity / central vision.

Testing

If you are concerned about macular degeneration a visit to your local ophthalmologist might be in order. Also, by visiting the site below you can test yourself with the Amsler grid. This is a test used to determine if there is any significant compromise in central vision. To do this follow the link below:

http://www.eyesight.org/EyeTest/eyetest.html

Risk factors

Macular degeneration is age related as noted above and the older you are, the more at risk you are. Race also factors in here as it is more common in whites but does occur in all races. It is more common in those who are farsighted.

Now for some risk factors over which we all have some control.

Smoking

High blood pressure

Vascular disease

High intake of saturated fat and cholesterol

High blood cholesterol level

Exposure to sunlight

*************

Summary

To lower your risk for macular degeneration:

Stop smoking

Work to decrease your blood pressure. Please see the last two newsletters on blood pressure to see what lifestyle changes you can make to help lower your blood pressure. If you would like to review these articles they are both posted on this site or visit Dr. Mericle's blog (the link is in the resource box at the bottom of this article).

Always wear sunglasses with good UV protection when you are outside and always be careful to never look into direct sunlight.

Dietary Modification

A low cholestrol, low fat and low or NO sugar diet which is high in green leafy vegetables and foods that are high in vitamins E and C and Lutien, which is an antioxidant found in high quantities in spinach, kale and other dark green leafy vegetables, is recommended.

The leading causes of vascular diseases here in America are sugar ingestion (adult onset diabetes) and animal protein ingestion (coronary artery disease and stroke).

The MericleDiet

The MericleDiet is the only diet today that meets or exceeds these requirements. It makes the transition away from sugar and animal products as easy as it can be and will supply your retina with all the dark leafy green vegetables and energy from complex carbohydrates that it needs. It will lower your risk of adult onset diabetes mellitus and the ongoing vascular destruction associated with diabetes and keep your larger arteries more healthy by keeping your saturated fat and cholesterol levels low.

Cutting for Rookies

Weight loss is a goal millions of people have but very few people have the knowledge needed to successfully lose weight. Not only do you have to eat less calories, you have to know how to keep muscle loss to a minimum as well. This article will discuss the basics of cutting up, what cutting is, how to properly cut, and tips to help you lose as much fat as possible. You should then be able to use what you`ve learned into your own diet and workout regimen.

Cutting is simply stripping the body of excess bodyfat while keeping as much muscle mass as possible. Call it getting ripped, shredded, or sliced, it all serves the same purpose; to make the body look the best as possible. There are three primary reasons for wanting to cut. You may be training for a bodybuilding competition and need to achieve that hard appearance with cuts and striations. You could be into the bulking-cutting cycles and want to lose a little bit of fat to look good for a special occasion. Finally, you could even be naturally prone to carrying excess bodyfat and want to cut down in order to get that bodybuilder`s appearance.

Most weight loss diets forget the fact that you are trying to lose fat, not just weight itself. There are even bodybuilders who believe that they can lose fat and gain muscle at the same time. From a scientific point of view, it`s simply just not possible to do this because when the body is in an energy deficit, it cannot gain muscle as well. That is why it is very important to choose a diet that is one or the other, cutting or bulking.

No matter which diet you choose, there are a few helpful tips that will speed up the fat loss process. Do some sort of aerobic activity. Aerobics speed up your metabolism and allows you to eat more calories daily. You need to engage in a weight lifting routine. Muscle burns calories, which is exactly what you want to have. Use basic supplements such as a healthy fat source and a multivitamin. Drink plenty of water, you don`t have to drown yourself but you should at least stay hydrated. You also need to make sure that you are getting plenty of sleep. Sleeping will decrease your chances of gaining unwanted fat from stress so it is a must that you get eight to ten hours of sleep daily.

Fat loss is a rather simple matter if you have experience doing it. The first time one goes on a cutting diet you may think ,Oh my god, I can`t eat six meals everyday. Or I can`t go very long without eating junk food. That`s the beauty of it, when on a cutting diet, you can have a cheat meal once every two weeks to keep your mind fresh and your body metabolism the previous healthy nutrients that you were consuming. Do the right thing, go on a cutting diet. Until next time, peace.

How To Apply Loose Powder Mineral Cosmetics

MINERAL COSMETICS MINERAL MAKEUP USERS GUIDE

Applying Loose Mineral Makeup Foundations

Tap a small amount of powder into the top and swirl your brush into it (for best results we recommend using a Kabuki brush). Tap the bottom of the handle with the brush head facing upward on a hard surface (e.g. Bathroom counter). This settles the powder into the brush head. Firmly spread powder on clean, dry skin to evenly blend pigments.

For blemishes, a separate concealer is not needed. Use a shader brush to apply small amounts to the problem areas and blend well. For those with dry, flaky skin, loose mineral foundation can be blended with our specially formulated cream to create a cream foundation. First moisturize as usual, then tap a small amount of powder into the palm of the hand. Add a drop of moisturizer. Blend the two products together until a smooth, creamy consistency is achieved. Use your fingers or make-up wedge to apply.

Applying Loose Mineral Cosmetics Veils

Mineral Veil can be worn alone or over Mineral Foundation. Tap a small amount of powder into the top and swirl your brush into it (for best results I recommend using a Flat top bronzer brush). Tap the bottom of the handle with the brush head facing upward on a hard surface (e.g. Bathroom counter). Brush powder on and blend well.

Applying Mineral Makeup Bronzers

Remove the seal from the sifter, and place the Bronzer brush directly against the sifter holes. Turn both upside down and tap the jar just a little so some powders gets on the brush bristles.

Lift the brush and gently tap the bottom of it on a flat surface to settle the powder into the head. Gently brush the Bronzer on cheeks, cheekbones, and anywhere else you want to add warm tones. The only mistake you can make is to use too much. For darker color, apply a second layer.

Applying Mineral Cosmetics Ultra Mattes For Eyes - Recommended brushes: firm shadow brush, angle liner.

Ultra-Mattes for Eyes can be used as eye shadow or contour color, or as liquid liner. To use as an eye shadow, tip the container at an angle, and tap it until some powder rests on the edge of the sifter. Gently swirl a firm shadow brush into the powder, and then tap the handle of the brush onto the side of the container, letting excess powder fall back into the jar. Apply the shadow with short, firm strokes, then follow up with a swipe of a blending brush until all visible lines are softened. For liquid liner, wet an angled liner brush, then dip the wet brush into the powder. Make a creamy paste on the back of your hand or in the top of the container. The consistency should not be runny. Then trace a thin line around the lash, staying as close to the lash as possible. Once the liner has dried, it can be left as-is, or smudged with the firm shadow brush for a softer effect.

Multi-Purpose Mineral Makeup Powders

Directions

Eye Shadow ~ Use any color from our collection as eye shadow. Simply dip an eye shadow brush into the desired color and apply to your eyelids. Choose a lighter color as a highlighter to apply under the brow. Use a darker color in the crease as a shader.

Blush ~ Because our product is so pure, the use of a blush brush will only waste your product. Instead, use a cotton ball and lightly touch the tip into the desired color. Apply along the cheekbone and blend well.

Eye Liner ~ Dip your liner brush into water. Then wet applicator into the desired color. Mix the powder and water together on the back of your hand or in a separate container to create a creamy liquid liner. Dip the eyeliner brush into the liquid and carefully apply to the upper and/or lower lids, staying as close to the lashes as possible.

Lip Color ~ Dip your lip brush into your clear lip gloss/lip balm and then into the desired color. Apply the mix to your lips and blend well. Add more powder to deepen the color.

Nail Polish ~ Because the pigment contains no dye, you do not need to apply a base coat. Simply use clear nail polish and dip the brush into the desired color and paint onto nails. For a darker color, use more powder. You can also mix the pigments into colored nail polish to change its tint.

Body Shimmer/Highlighter ~ Use a cotton ball and lightly touch it into the desired color. Dust the powder onto your shoulder, face, chest, etc., for a healthy glow. Certain colors can also be used as bronzers

EXTRA TIPS

If your mineral makeup foundation appears pasty, here are a few possibilities:

1. The brush! Unfortunately, the right brush is an absolute necessity when applying loose mineral cosmetics foundations. The best brush for mineral makeup foundation is a Kabuki brush. Kabuki brushes have a very high density of hair- short, firm, and soft to boot. Think of how hard it is to spread cold butter on untoasted bread with a plastic knife. This is what is happening when you're using the brushes (however expensive and high-quality they may be) that you already own. Even bronzer brushes that look similar may not have firm or dense enough hair to accomplish the task. The result? Too much makeup, not well spread, sticking in all of the wrong places, definitely not natural-looking!

2. Too much product on the brush: Mineral makeup is very concentrated. It is made up of pure pigment; the same pigments that cosmetics companies use to add color to pressed and liquid foundations. Because there is little if any 'filler in this type of powder, it is imperative that you put just a little bit of powder on your brush and use that on one cheek. Buff it in well in a circular motion before applying more. How much is enough? If you follow the basic mineral foundation instructions found on the loose mineral makeup foundation product page, you should get the right amount on the brush: Basically, you press the head of the brush directly against the holes of the sifter, tip the whole unit upside down, tap the jar a bit, and then lift the brush off of the sifter. There should be a light dusting of powder on the brush head, and that amount is sufficient to cover at least one cheek, if not the whole face. You can always add another layer, so start with less.

3. The wrong shade: This is especially an issue with women of color. If you have a golden undertone, and the color you apply has a blue or neutral undertone, your face may appear grayish or pasty. It is not necessarily that the product is too light, or has the wrong formula for your skin, just the wrong undertone. Don't assume that mineral cosmetics don't work on ethnic skin. Be persistent until you find a shade that at least comes close. Blending loose mineral makeup foundation shades together, is as simple as shaking the jar, and blending one color with another may achieve that perfect shade that you're looking for!

4. Not enough buffing: Have you ever watched someone (usually a guy!) buff a coat of wax onto their car? They buff for a loooong time! This creates a smooth, silky appearance that simply applying the wax would never achieve. Do the same with your mineral makeup foundation. Buffing with the brush actually brings out the qualities of the minerals. Use a firm (Don't be afraid to be firm, our brushes are very soft) touch, and in a circular motion, blend, or spread the makeup around the cheeks, down the jaw line, over the nose. Do this several times, and you will begin to see your face glow and your skin look flawless and utterly natural.

Dieting: Cut Confusion and Go for a Balanced Meal

If you?re confused about the calories to need to cut out of your diet to lose weight, then read on. But first let?s get our concepts right.

What is a calorie?

It is a measure or unit of energy. If you say that a food contain 100 calories, this means that if the food is completely metabolized or ?burnt? in the human body, 100 non-metric units or 420 metric units of energy will be released for use by the body.

The body can use this energy for physical activity and for keeping the basic metabolic processes (digestion, breathing etc.) running. Your body may use the calories in the food to do daily work or just to provide energy for your body processes while you are sleeping.

If you take in more energy in the form of calories than your body requires, that energy will be stored in the form of fat. If you take in less energy than your body requires, it will have to get some energy out of its storage depots and break down some fat to obtain the required energy, thus causing weight loss.

How many calories should I eat if I want to slim down?

Generally speaking, we need to reduce energy intake by 500 cal to lose between 0.5 and 1 kg per week ? a rate that will help to keep the weight you lose from being regained.

An average, moderately active woman between the age of 18 and 50 needs 2,200 cal a day to maintain her weight. To lose weight, she needs to reduce her energy intake by 500 cal down to 1700 cal a day.

An average, moderately active man between the age of 18 and 50 needs, 2900 cal to maintain his body weight. To reduce weight, an average man would have to reduce his energy intake by 500 cal down to 2400 calories a day.

Is food x fattening?

Many of us wonder about specific foods or beverages and whether they are fattening or not. The answer is: all foods and drinks are potentially fattening if consumed in excess.

This means that even if you eat what many regard as ?good or healthy? foods (e.g. Yoghurt, fruits, vegetables, vegetarian dishes etc.) and you eat so much that you push up your energy intake beyond your daily requirement, these good and healthy foods will still make you gain weight.

The fact that a food or beverage has excellent nutritional properties does not mean it does not have the potential to make you fat if you overdo the intake.

Conversely, many foods that have very high energy content, such as olive oil, are so nutritious that it?s a good idea to include them in your diet, but in moderate quantities.

What are negative energy foods?

The concept of negative energy foods and drinks is also cause for much confusion this theory is based on the fact that we use up some energy to digest foods and drink.

Some foods have such a low energy content that we theoretically use up more energy than they contain to digest them. Thus, one can regard these foods as negative energy foods. Examples include lettuce, celery, tomatoes, cucumber, lemon juice, grapefruit, strawberries and other berries, cabbage, sugarless chewing gum and artificially-sweetened beverages.

The problem is that people think that they can eat only these foods when they are trying to lose weight. No one can live on lettuce and tomatoes for days on end. This is a totally unbalanced diet and will result in variety of negative effects, including deficiencies, constipation, lack of energy, faintness and shakiness.

The ironic thing is that if you try and lose weight by ingesting negative energy foods and artificially-sweetened drinks on their own, your body many react to this starvation regimen by shutting off its weight loss systems and you may stop losing weight altogether.

Negative energy foods are excellent fillers when you are on a slimming diet. For example, having a large salad made up of these foods with cottage cheese and whole wheat bread will make a filling, low-fat, low-energy meal that will keep you satisfied for longer.

Skin CareDecreased Perspiration

Perspiration is important for our health to keep the normal body temperature. Some of us suffer from excess perspiration, while some of us have very low perspiration or no perspiration. Perspiration either excessive or very low both are bad. Excessive perspiration unless a disease causes it, is only a nuisance whereas decreased perspiration can be life threatening sometimes. In decreased perspiration the patient either perspires very little or does not perspire at all. Decreased perspiration may be because of-

Inherited Disease- Some children inherit a condition known as hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (HED), and are born without any sweat gland. This condition puts them at high risk that may be life threatening.

Some medications- some drugs interfere with the working of sweat glands. Especially some drugs used for mental disorders can cause this.

Disorder of autonomic neuropathy- when some nerves that control the autonomic functions of the body are damaged, the sweat glands stop functioning normally.

Burns and infection- with some burns, the sweat glands are damaged and some infections of sweat glands stop the normal functioning of sweat glands.

Quit Playing "The Blame Game"

Remember when we were 7 years old? At that age, any insult (no matter how mean or despicable) could instantly be nullified by simply replying I'm rubber, you're glue....whatever you say bounces off me and sticks on you!

Even though we're not seven years old anymore, insults still aren't any fun at all! Many of us thought we'd outgrow name-calling and the 'blame game', but here we are....fully grown adults.....still playing those games.

Now, we may not all be calling each other names, but many of us are still playing the 'blame game'. We blame others for our weight gain. We blame others for our failed diet. We blame others for our PERCEIVED failures. But are others at fault?

Sometimes what we say to others 'bounces off them and sticks on us', to paraphrase the old rhyme.

While we'll admit that genetics plays a HUGE HUGE HUGE role in our weight, it's also true that each of us makes DAILY CHOICES that impact the number on the scale.

So who (or what?) are we blaming for our weight? Genetics? Fast food? A busy lifestyle? Ice cream? Family? Work?

The bottom line is that WHILE WE MAY BE ABLE TO LEGITIMATELY BLAME SOMEONE (OR SOMETHING) ELSE FOR OUR CURRENT WEIGHT, WE ARE ALL IN CONTROL OF OUR FUTURE WEIGHT.

Each of us knows how we arrived at our current weight. Perhaps we've always been heavy. Perhaps that weight crept on during the last few years. Or, maybe, we were thin until we hit age and then the pounds started piling on. However we arrived at our current weight, the fact is that we're here. We cannot change the past. But, we do have control over the future.

No matter how hard we try, we can't change what we ate yesterday. In the same way, we cannot go back in time and alter the amount of exercise we got yesterday. The past is behind us.

But the good news is that THE FUTURE HASN'T HAPPENED YET. Each of us can choose to eat better tomorrow. Each of us can choose to exercise tomorrow.

The tendency to get 'stuck in the past' is a major reason why Americans are not getting thinner. Too many of us are wasting our time trying to place the blame for our weight on someone else, rather than planning to do something about it.

A perfect example are the lawsuits now pending against fast food restaurants. Thousands of people in the United States have decided that fast food restaurants are to blame for their weight. Are they right? Maybe, but probably not. This article isn't the place to judge whether or not restaurants are to blame for the obesity epidemic in our nation. Instead, the point we need to learn here is that IF WE WANT TO GET RESULTS, WE MUST STOP WORRYING ABOUT THE PAST AND START PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE.

So, while some of us may have legitimate complaints about the past, let's ask ourselves if that really matters. Life isn't fair.....some of us are genetically inclined to be heavy, just as some of us are genetically inclined to get cancer. Either way, it's not fair. But rather than throw up our hands in dispair and give up all hope, let's take control of our future!!

Remember that we cannot change our past BUT WE ALL HAVE SOME DEGREE OF CONTROL OVER OUR FUTURE.

The moral of the story is to START TODAY. Sure, maybe we've skipped a few (or a few dozen) workouts. Sure, maybe we ate four servings of cheesecake yesterday. WE CAN'T CHANGE THE PAST, SO LET'S FOCUS ON THE FUTURE.

The past may be full of bad diets, skipped workouts and expanding waistlines.....BUT THE FUTURE IS YET TO COME!! Let's stop the blame, take control of our future, and get busy. It's our choice.

What Is The West Nile Virus

The West Nile virus is passed to humans by the bite of an infected mosquito. The symptoms are: fever, headache, muscle aches, and loss of appetite. The symptoms can last 3 to 6 days. Other symptoms might be nausea, vomiting, rash on the chest, stomach and back.

Most people recover from West Nile virus. Some develop brain inflammation, which is fatal. You need to see a health care provider if you experience severe msucle weakness, high fever, a stiff neck, or confusion. People over 50 are at most risk for serious problems and death.

The symptoms of the West Nile virus are symptoms of other illnesses. If you have been bitten by mosquitoes and experience these symptoms, or you have been in an area where people and/or animals have been sick with West Nile virus, you can suspect the West Nile virus may be the cause of your symptoms. There are blood tests your health care provider can use to test for signs of West Nile virus.

There is no specific medicine to treat West Nile virus nor is there a cure. Usually the disease goes away without treatment and most people recover fully. If you have a severe case of West Nile virus you may need to be hospitalized. Your health care provider can tell you how to manage the symptoms of West Nile virus.

Some ways to protect yourself and your pets from West Nile virus might include: Limiting your time outside between dusk and dawn; Wear protective clothing like long sleeves, and long pants; Put mosquito nets over infant carriers when outdoors; Use an insect repellent containing DEET. Don't use repellents containing DEET on infants under 2 months old; Remove standing water from pool covers and other places where mosquitoes can breed; Turn plastic wading pools upside down when not in use; Store empty flowerpots or trash cans indoors; Make sure your rain gutters drain properly.

Energize Your Career and Life: A Simple 3Step Plan

As the job market becomes more competitive due to corporate restructuring and outsourcing, it will take ever increasing amounts of energy to do what needs to be done to succeed in both your career and other areas of your life. Most people would agree that good health is synonymous with high energy and low energy is considered to be a symptom of poor health. That is why adopting a healthy lifestyle is the key to maintaining your energy at optimal levels.

The three habits discussed in this article, if practiced on a daily basis can ensure that you have the energy you need to soar straight to the top of your chosen career ladder.

Step One: Drink more water

Your body is 75% water. Your brain is 85% water. Your body needs lots of water to function properly. It is important to remember that your water supply must be replenished on a daily basis. It is a mistake to believe that you can fill-up on Monday and then bypass the water cooler for the remainder of the week. Ideally, each day you should drink 8 ounces of water for every 25 pounds of body weight. Coffee, tea and soft drinks can not be substituted for water. While it is true that these beverages have a high water content, they also contain caffeine and other chemicals that dehydrate your body. If you regularly consume large quantities of these beverages you should drink an additional 8 ounces of water for every 8 ounces of these beverages that you consume each day.

Step Two: Eat Lots of Fresh Fruits and Vegetables

Take a few minutes and make a list of everything you ate today that was not processed and that did not come out of a bag, box or can. Most people are surprised at how few items appear on their list. That?s because we live in a fast food nation and our diets are primarily comprised of highly processed prepackaged foods. The problem with eating large quantities of these foods is that, unlike fresh fruits and vegetables, processed foods are the foods we tend to overeat. When was the last time you heard yourself say ? I wish I had stopped with that first bowl of broccoli or I really didn?t need that second helping of artichokes?? Your answer is probably never. But, it?s an all too common refrain to say ?I didn?t need that second helping of ice cream or slice of cake.?

Overeating is a major energy zapper. Think about it: what is the first thing you think about doing after you eat a big meal? If you are like most people, your answer has something to do with lying down on a couch. It takes more energy for your body to digest food than any other function it performs on a daily basis. That?s why if you want to keep your energy level high, fresh fruits and vegetables should be the mainstay of your diet. They are 75% water which means they are extremely easy to digest and they are jam packed with energy enhancing minerals and nutrients.

Practice Three: Exercise Everyday

Energy can only come from energy and a body at rest will remain at rest unless acted upon by some force. These two laws of physics are the key to understanding the importance of developing the habit of exercising every day. Lack of energy is one of the most common excuses people use to justify not exercising every day. Does this sound familiar? You go to bed with the best intention of getting up early and going to the gym, and then the alarm clock sounds, and you don?t get out of bed because you just don?t have the energy to get going.

The only place we are going to get the energy we need to exercise is by exercising. That?s why the more we exercise, the more energy we have to exercise, and the more energy we will have to do all of the other things we need to do. Admittedly, this may be one of the most difficult habits to practice because of another law of physics called ?inertia.? Inertia is the disinclination to move, act or change. It is a force that resists acceleration or action.

An effective way to overcome inertia or the resistance to exercise is to tell yourself that you only have to start exercising each day. Sometimes, trying to contemplate where you are going to find the time and energy to exercise for 30 or 60 minutes can be overwhelming. But, if you can make a commitment to start exercising everyday, there is an excellent chance you will summon the energy to keep exercising for a much longer period.

Following this simple 3-step plan can give you the energy you need to advance in your career and transform your life.

The Greatest Secret of the Universe

The goal of human life, according to yogis and sages, is to unite one?s individual consciousness with the Supreme Consciousness. This union of one?s small ?I? with the Cosmic ?I? is also known as yoga. Anyone who has ever tried to meditate knows that achieving the final goal of yoga is not as easy as it sounds. Many people, in fact, give up the pursuit before they reach the goal. Despite this seeming difficulty there is a simple technique that can put the achievement of ultimate bliss within the reach of everyone.

Before I reveal the ?greatest secret of the universe? it is useful to understand how the process of meditation actually works. ?As you think, so you become? is the principle upon which meditation is based. If you think about something that is limited or small, then your mind becomes small.

On the other hand, if you forget about the physical world around you, turn your attention within and begin concentrated thinking on an infinite object your mind begins to expand. If you continue the process in a systematic way, regularly every day, then your individual consciousness will one day merge with the Supreme Consciousness.

The greatest obstacle on this path is your own ego. Of course you need an ego to even begin meditation. After all it only when you say ?I will practice meditation today? that you can get started. However, during the process of meditation it becomes bothersome if instead of thinking about the Supreme Consciousness you begin to think about ?my job?, ?my house, ?my car? and other things connected with your everyday life.

With constant practice you can overcome your attachment to mundane objects and one day arrive at a state when there will only be one thought in your mind, ?I am the Supreme Consciousness.? This is a great achievement but even in this state your ?I? feeling still exists. As long as your feeling of individual consciousness exists, you will remain separate from ultimate union with the Supreme Consciousness.

Here is where the ?greatest secret of the universe? can help you out. Normally when you meditate, you are the subject and the Supreme Consciousness is the object of your thoughts. If you turn it all around and think that the Supreme Consciousness is the subject and you are his object then your meditation will change dramatically.

It will become much easier to remain in a meditative state when you think that the Supreme Consciousness is all around you, witnessing you, meditating on you. Instead of trying to meditate on the Supreme Consciousness, let him meditate on you! What could be simpler?

As simple as this technique is, it is the key to reaching a state where there is no feeling of your individual ?I? and only the oneness of blissful union with the infinite.

There is an old story that illustrates this process. A seeker came to a door and knocked. A voice asked, ?Who?s there?? The seeker responded, ?I am here.? The door remained locked and there was no reply from within. The seeker returned another day and tried once more. Again when asked ?Who?s there?? he replied ?I am here.? And again he failed to enter.

Finally one day he knocked at the door and when the voice asked, ?Who?s there?? he replied, ?Thou? and the door opened for him.

Big "Buts" Sabotage Weight Loss Health and Fitness (Part 9 of 12)

?Yeah, But It Takes Too Much Time?

Your life is busy. The food you prepare and eat now is the same food that you have been preparing and eating for years. It takes little time and no extra effort. You like that?quick and mindless.

Sure. You would love to explore the ideal way of eating to promote and maintain health?yours and your family?s. But where would you find the time to not only learn about this new way of eating, but also to shop for and prepare those foods.

The thought boggles your brain so you give up before you even try.

Amazingly enough, once you learn which foods are the best foods to eat, it takes less time and less effort to shop for and prepare those meals. Food shopping evolves into a list-less no-brainer and preparation is minimal.

How much thought and time does it take to shop for, wash and cut up vegetables to make a large salad or to steam? How much effort does it take to wash an apple or two, open your mouth, bite down, and chew? When it comes to saving time, fruit and some vegetables are the fastest fast foods there are.

Furthermore, in the whole scheme of things, what takes more time?shopping and preparing plant-based meals or spending hours and even days or months receiving treatment for some condition or disease that resulted from the lack of good nutrition?

Eating correctly, just like exercise, doesn?t take time?it gives you time, when it counts, at the end of your life.

Not only that, eating correctly and daily exercise enhance your ideal weight, optimum level of energy, health and fitness, and the quality of every precious moment that life offers you.

Bad Breath Solution

Anyone who has struggled with the problem of halitosis knows how challenging it can be to find a bad breath solution. Fortunately, this area of medical treatment, ignored for so long by everyone except the producers of mouthwashes and breath mints, is enjoying considerable close attention these days; things started to improve when we learned where the foul odor of bad breath really came from. It was the first step to developing treatments that work.

Dr. J. Tonzetich may have earned the distinction of being the first bad breath doctor when he worked out the process by which bad breath is produced in the mouth. The odor, he discovered, is caused by volatile sulfur compounds produced by bacteria in the mouth. The offensive bacteria are anaerobes, living in places in the mouth where there is little oxygen: in pockets between the gums and teeth, in the spaces between the teeth, around the tonsils, and deep between the papillae on the surface of the tongue at the back of the mouth. Understanding that these bacteria were responsible for the problem allowed researchers to start an informed search for a bad breath solution.

For most people, the appropriate bad breath doctor will be either a dentist or a medical doctor. These are the professionals who can do a proper assessment of a patient's dental and physical health to determine why the anaerobes are doing so well in the mouth. There may be periodontal disease, a sinus condition, a problem around the tonsils, post nasal drip, or even a more serious undiagnosed disease condition that requires treatment. It's important that halitosis sufferers have their condition evaluated by medical professionals before attempting their own bad breath solution.

Sometimes, there is a true bad breath doctor who can be consulted. Again, these are usually former dentists or medical doctors who have taken a special interest in helping people to find a bad breath solution. These professionals may have done their own research and developed an approach to treatment that has had considerable success. They generally operate clinics and see patients by appointment like any doctor's office. Proper assessment will include verifying that the patient truly does have a bad breath problem and checking for signs of all the problems mentioned above. Referral to a doctor or dentist may result if that appears appropriate. If you think a bad breath clinic might be the right choice for you, see if you can find one in your area - unfortunately they are quite rare.

If you are considering self-treatment of halitosis, think about trying a product recommended by a clinic bad breath doctor. Though the clinic may be inaccessible to you, the products are often available by mail or over the internet. Clinic products generally have a good reputation and a money back guarantee. You are more likely to find a bad breath solution with one of these providers than with products and vendors you know nothing about. Again however, it would be wise to consult a dentist, and possibly a medical doctor about your problem before embarking on any course of self-treatment.

Health and Fitness Success 7 Easy Tips

Two weeks ago today I dramatically pushed back the limits of my running. In one morning I went from a best distance of 12km in an hour and fifteen minutes (done on a treadmill in my gym), to running 12 miles round a Welsh lake, at a better pace than I have done in the gym, and without stopping.

To achieve this is used several personal development techniques. How did I do this, and how can you use these same techniques to achieve your exercise goal?

Inspiring Health and Fitness

Keeping me going was my overall inspiring health and fitness goal. This goal is to run the Flora London Marathon 2007. I realized if I could not run the 12 miles, how could I run 26? I also realized that if I could achieve this leap in distance then the marathon should be mine. It was my desire to cross the line next April that kept me going every step of the way. Besides, twice round the lake would be a marathon! If I could do one lap, surely I could do two laps?

To Do: You need to have a health and fitness goal that is achievable, but sufficiently high to excite and stretch you.

Mentoring and Encouragement

One of the biggest things that helped me to achieve this breakthrough was the encouragement and advice of an experienced marathon runner (my mentor for the run). But above all my mentor ran every step of the way with me. Having someone tell you that you can do something that you previously thought impossible, and the person telling you this being qualified to do so is very powerful. You have no excuse for not pushing your boundaries. When this person then goes every step of the way with you, advising and encouraging you it is even more powerful. Having a mentor can be one of the most powerful tools for personal development you can use.

To Do: Find someone who is qualified to take you one step further towards you health and fitness goal, and ask them to take that step with you.

Score Keeping I kept score at regular intervals along the run by checking my heart rate on my heart rate monitor. One of my aims was to run the distance within a set heart rate range. I congratulated myself every time my watch showed I was within that range. In this way I was scoring myself to achieve a regular pace. I am glad to say I got a perfect score by the finish line.

To Do: Decide on a way to score yourself, and stick to it. Celebrate every time you win!.

Goal Setting and Rewards

Throughout the run I kept setting goals such as ?get to the castle? or ?make it to the dam? or near the end I was saying ?just to the next lamppost.? In this way I broke the 12 miles down into manageable chunks, and would celebrate each time I achieved my goal. I also had the overriding goals of running all the way (no walking or stopping) and setting a good pace, all of which I achieved.

To Do: Break you next exercise session into tiny goals, and reward yourself every time you achieve these mini goals.

Distraction

Running for 2 hours and 10 minutes was just as much a mental challenge as physical. My mind was full of doubts and my body full of aches, and part of it was just plain boring. So how did I cope? One way was by distracting myself. I remembered wonderful holidays, focused on a particular lamb or tree that I was running towards, or visualized the Power of Intention falling from the sky and filling me with great energy and endurance. Anything to take my mind off how I felt and how much more there was to go.

To Do: Plan in advance to remember something exciting, and remember it in vivid detail.

Power of Intention

I have been listening to at CD set in my car called The Power of Intention by Wayne W Dyer. The CDs talk of us being made out of and part of a universal energy. That universal energy is always available for us to use. I am still not quite sure what to make of this yet, but while running I called upon this energy to fill me. I finished, so it worked didn?t it? Perhaps, but at the very least it worked as a mental distraction.

To Do: Find a cassette or CD to listen to that will give you a more positive outlook for your activity.

Peer Pressure

From deciding to do the run on the Friday, to actually doing it on the Sunday, I made sure I told every one of the 55 people I was camping with that weekend, that I would ?run the lake.? This set up a huge amount of peer pressure for me. If I failed the run I would painfully and publicly fail BIG. This created a powerful incentive for me to succeed in the run. Also as a result of succeeding the run after telling everyone, a lot of respect was generated which translated into a large number of sponsorships for the charity I am running for St Ann's Hospice.

To Do: Increase peer pressure on yourself by telling everyone what you plan to do, and ask them to check up on you later to make sure you have done it.

As you can see I was able to use many personal development techniques in order to take me from the initial challenge to run the lake, to actually running it and running it well. Without the use of the above techniques I would have been less likely to finish. The techniques dramatically increased my chance of success, and I?ll continue to use them till I cross that London Marathon finish line (and beyond). Make sure you use these techniques too.

Damian Miles runs a weekly free health and fitness ezine at http://dlmiles.co.uk in which he shares in simple language those techniques that help to create the mental attitude that almost guarantees success in achieving health, fitness, weight loss and happiness goals. He also teaches others how to live a happy and fulfilled life regardless of life?s events at http://dlmiles.co.uk/happy He has long studied personal development techniques, and has successfully employed them in these areas.

Causes and Treatment of Wrinkles

As people age, their epidermal cells become less sticky that makes skin noticeably thinner. When skin becomes thinner, the effectiveness of its barrier function decreases and releases moisture instead of locking it in the skin. When this happen, the skin is more prone to dryness and it is likely to lose its ability to repair itself.

When the dermal layer becomes thin, it produces less collagen and elastin fibers. These causes wrinkles and make skin sag.

Causes

Aside from the aging process, sun damage is also linked to wrinkle formation. When skin is exposed to sun for a long period of time, it can result to dryness and it can damage the collagen fibers that protects the skin. In addition, prolonged exposure to sun can cause skin disorder and cancer.

Other factors of wrinkle formation are the following: Poor nutrition, stress, sleep deprivation, excess alcohol or illegal drug consumption, and pollution.

Prevention

1. Prolonged exposure to sunlight can cause serious skin damage. Experts recommend the use of hat when on the beach especially between 12nn-2pm. Use of sunscreen and sunglasses is also helpful to avoid wrinkles that might appear around the eyes.

2. Smoking is dangerous to your health. And also to your skin. People who are smoking form wrinkles around their mouth earlier compare to non-smokers. To keep skin healthy, avoid cigarette and smoky places like bars and restaurants.

3. Avoid alcoholic beverages. Excessive alcohol consumption is bad for the skin. Alcohol prevents the body from absorbing vitamins needed to keep the skin healthy.

4. Drink at least 8-12 glasses of water everyday. Water helps in keeping the skin glowing and healthy. It is an effective element in reducing wrinkles, flushing toxins, fat, and other foreign substances out of the body.

5. Use olive oil as much as possible. It makes the skin soft and younger looking.

6. Eat tomatoes and vegetables. These contain nutrients that are proven to make the skin look younger. In addition, fruits, nuts, and beans are also good food for the skin.

7. Resist the urge to sunbathe. Experts agree that although tan makes men and women look sexier, it can pose threat to the skin. Try self-tanner instead. Never use tanning bed or sunlamp.

8. Pamper the skin once in a while by going to spa or sauna. Also, get 8 or more hours of sleep. These can do wonders on the skin in no time.

9. Use moisturizer twice everyday.

Treatment

Dermatologists are advising people who have few, shallow wrinkles to use moisturizing creams and sunscreen. However, more and more people are looking for more advance technology in erasing the signs of ageing.

Recently, dermatologists responded to people?s request for wrinkle treatment. Botox was introduced that soften wrinkles that are caused by grimacing or squinting. Hyaluronic or collagen acid are injected on the skin to elevate wrinkles.

Another breakthrough is laser treatment to minimize wrinkles. Most common laser treatment is called Carbon Dioxide laser that is designed for deeper wrinkles.

People who have deep, excessive wrinkles resort to face lift. It is a surgical procedure that is both invasive and expensive that produces excellent results.

Wrinkles cannot be avoided but they can be delayed. There is nothing more satisfying than looking younger than one?s age. So, just follow these tips and stay young!

Beauty Can Be An Ugly Business

Last night I was at a show. The women looked so glamourous, and their make-up was so beautiful. Later, backstage, they looked garish and old up close.

This is a lesson that all women over thirty need to learn. Hard lines, perfectly applied streaks and dark eyeliner can look beautiful as you walk through the door at an event. But it is terrifying up close, it puts off men and women alike. It becomes a Halloween mask.

I see a real life example of this every single Friday. A woman walks by on her way to a business meeting, once a week I watch all of the men that attend my own meeting look up to admire this 50+ beauty as she walks through the door. She is dressed immaculately and she's in wonderful shape. But up close, in the words of my teenage daughter she's a mess.

She's not Tammy Faye Baker, but she channels her. Her foundation is two shades two dark and she does a flawless job of blending at the hairline, but the demarcation at th neck makes her carefully applied cosmetics looks mask like.

She wears false eyelashes, they are too long, but when she bends down to reach for her meetings agenda, the eyelashes become obvious. It's a bit like seeing what you believe is a beautiful piece of art and getting close to find its a crayon rendering.

As we grow older and want to remain looking youthful. Less is more. It's time to invest in one of the lighter, light reflecting foundations. Blend, blend, blend should be the watch words for those of us that no longer have a perfect canvas.

Am I saying we shouldn't update our look? No! (Update by all means, go to the Trish McEvoy counter and buy one of the new color wash eyeshadows. Yves Saint Laurent offers one of the best highlighters ever made, bringing light to our faces and actually giving us a youthful look. )

I am saying less is more. Leave the heavy handed make-up to twenty year olds and their forgiving complexions. The advantage of age is discretion, our experience gives us the upper hand and remember if it would look good on the runway...it would look scary up close.

Today's Beauty Affirmation, Today I acknowledge that aging beauty is not about covering up. It is about adding light to my best features and uncovering, not covering my beauty.

How to Curb Food Cravings at Night to Lose Weight Naturally

Wanna lose weight naturally and more quickly? Then you've got to control your nighttime food cravings! All food cravings are diet-killers, but the ones that hit you late at night seem to be the toughest to overcome. What's worse, late-night eating has been shown to be a leading cause of weight gain. Your body has much less need for calories at night, so anything you eat is more likely to be stored as fat.

According to a recent USDA study, overweight adults tend to eat significantly more calories at night than normal-weight adults, but they eat only slightly more calories at other times of the day. Another recent study from the University of Texas showed that it's much easier to overeat at night, mainly because late-night snacking seems less satisfying than snacking earlier in the day. Other studies have found that many people eat close to 50% of their daily calories at night!

Obviously, controlling your nighttime eating is vital if your goal is natural weight loss and better health. Of course, it's easier said than done. Here are some very effective tips for curbing food cravings at night:

1. Eat breakfast -- It's been proven that people who skip breakfast have a much harder time losing weight. By eating a big, healthy breakfast in the morning you'll give your body the energy it needs and dramatically reduce hunger and cravings later in the day.

2. Eat several small, healthy snacks and meals throughout the day -- People who eat small meals and snacks every few hours, earlier in the day, tend to feel better and have more energy. They also tend to eat fewer overall calories, especially at night. Keeping yourself from getting hungry may be the best craving-stopping technique out there!

3. Eat a healthy-sized dinner -- Don't make the mistake of eating too small of a dinner. You might think you're saving calories but you're just setting yourself up for hunger and food cravings later in the evening. Eat a good, medium-sized dinner that includes lots of high-fiber foods (like veggies, salads, and whole-grain breads, pastas, etc.). It's best to eat more protein and less fat and carbs at this meal because it's less likely to be stored as fat.

4. Keep your mind occupied at night -- Many people have a bad habit of eating when they're bored. They get home at night and zone out in front of the TV, often with a bag of chips or cookies at their side. It's called mindless snacking and it's a huge cause of weight gain, especially in America. Avoid the TV all together and replace it with something more interesting, like reading a good book, writing letters to friends, or doing a favorite hobby.

5. If you need to snack at night, choose healthy options -- It is possible to snack late at night without piling on the calories (and the fat). Fresh veggies and fruit are good, great-tasting options. So is low-fat, low-sugar yogurt and cheese. If you need something a little more satisfying have a piece of whole-grain toast with a small amount of natural peanut butter on top, a handful of mixed nuts, or a bowl of whole-grain cereal with low-fat milk. Finally, some people find that a cup of decaffeinated herbal tea really helps take their mind off food altogether.
